Vera Ellen Wang was  born in New York on June 7,1949. Her mother was Florence Wu and her father was Cheng Ching Wang. They were Chinese and Shanghainese. Vera had a brother named Kenneth.They grew up on Manhattan’s upper east side. She went to the elite chapin school.She also attended the school of American ballet.Then she enrolled in Sarah Lawrence college. Wang studied abroad in Paris for a little while.

 

After graduating in 1971 Vera started working for Vogue. She left that job after 15 years! She worked for Ralph Lauren. In 1989, when she was 39, Wang married her boyfriend Arthur Becker.She sketched her own wedding dress. She payed someone else to make it. Her dream wedding dress was 10,000 dollars.

A year later Vera’s father helped her start a boutique. She had her bridal boutique in the upscale classy Carlyle Hotel on Madison avenue in Madison avenue in New York city. The Vera Wang bridal house offered couture gowns. The store had items from Christian Dior and Arnold Scaasi. Vera Wang eventually launched her own collection of elegant bridal wear.

Wang first received international attention during the 1994 Olympics. She had designed a hand beaded ensemble for the figure skater Nancy Kerrigan. Since then Wang has made a line of fashionable sophisticated evening wear. Vera also has a collection of made to order couture designs. Vera Wang’s evening wear designs are sold my many deluxe upper class retailers like saks fifth avenue and Neiman Marcus.Vera’s designs have hit hollywood,too. Her fashions are worn to award ceremonies. stars wear her clothes, including Goldie Hawn, Halle Berry, Kim Kardashian, and Sofia Vergara.

In 2001 Wang launched her first fragrance. Her business started to grow. Now it Includes jewelry and more! Also in 2005 she won women’s wear designer of the year. In 2006 Vera made a deal with Kohl’s. They would make a less expensive brand called simply Vera.

Now Vera Wang lives with her husband and two daughters.
