On         August 10,1942 a designer was born! Betsey Johnson was born! She was born in Wethersfield ,Connecticut.Johnson grew up in the town Terryille. She loved dance and art. Betsey trained in many different styles of dance. She loved her recital costumes. They very elaborate. She spent many afternoons sketching costumes. ” What I tried to do was a combination  of dance and art” Betsey says.

In high school Johnson enjoyed cheer leading. Following her graduation she studied at Pratt institute. ” It was a killer year.I didn’t have time to do anything… well i had time to eat. I think i gained 100 pounds” Betsey told everyone. But later she transfered to syracuse university. she showed everyone she was an amazing student by graduating magna cum laude as a member of the phi kappa society in 1964.

Almost right after leaving syracuse Johnson made her first step in the fashion world. Betsey had won the mademoiselle magazine’s guest editor. she also earned a job with their art department.Just a year later she landed a job at paraphernalia. Its was an offbeat New York boutique. there she developed her whimsical style. Betsey Johnson loves bright colors,neon,deep necklines, and puffed sleeves.In 1970 Johnson left paraphernalia to work at Alley cat.Ita was a sports brand for youth back then.She continued to made clothes with bright colors and patterns that stand out.In 1971 Betsey Johnson won the coty fashion critics award. she was only 29! the youngest designer to receive the award. I’m sure her husband John Cale was proud.

In the mid 70s Alley cat went out of business and Betsey had a daughter named Lulu. Now that Alley Cat closed she worked designing maternity clothes and children’s clothing. “I thought it was all over until punk started in London”Betsey recalls. In 1978 revived by the Punk movement Johnson partnered up with Chantal Bacon To start Their own company.

In 1997 Betsey married again after divorcing john Cale. Her new husband was Jeffery Oliviere. But they have divorced. In 2000 Betsey Johnson was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was detected early so she was just fine. She can still do a chartwheel and a split!

In 2003 Johnson expanded her label to things like Jewelry and shoes.She is currently in her 70s but seems as youthful as she was Years ago. Rock on Betsey Johnson.
